Voyage Mapping: Hard Back

Voyage Mapping is a team or individual visual business planning tool that is used to help anticipate and manage potential future challenges - often by reviewing, reflecting, and discussing past experiences with team members. The activity uses visual metaphors of a sea journey to generate discussion of past and future challenges.

It enables them to review tasks, projects and processes they have undertaken and identify successes and failures, then using that review to inform planning and future risk management using individual perspectives within the group. 

Many individuals and organisations use the metaphor of a journey to describe their experiences;

• “It’s been a long, hard road….”
• “It’s been an uphill struggle but I think we’ve reached the summit…”
• “We’re at a crossroads: we need to make a very decisive change in direction.”

This hardback version is ideal for groups of 4 to 8 people working around a conference table or on any flat surface.

The exercise uses the idea of an old-fashioned sea voyage to represent the way in which explorers brought back with them the accounts of the events and incidents which shaped their voyage and the ‘tales’ of what they discovered. These stories include new knowledge and skills that were acquired, dangers faced and overcome and accounts of the feelings, relationships and memories which they shared.

As these stories are remembered and explored, learning emerges that can then be used and applied in planning for future voyages of discovery. The activity is equally effective when used to reflect on an individual, personal or professional journey, or the journey of a group, team or organisation.

There are several versions of the activity which cater for different groups sizes and areas of focus.
The Voyage Mapping activity can work with groups anywhere between 4 and 16 people.
